Lipids: structure; properties; occurence and importance

At the end of this activity, students should be able to:
– describe the structure of lipids and their major groups
– describe the structure of fatty acids and their significance as metabolic fuel and structural components of different groups of lipids, - describe the structure of a triacylglycerol molecule and the role of triacylglycerols in living organisms
– understand the bipolar character of the structure of phospholipid molecules and its biological significance
– describe the importance of cholesterol as a component of cell membranes and a substrate for the synthesis of steroid hormones and vitamin D3.
